Do you like organic and eco cosmetics? Do you try to buy natural stuff only? In this case, you should also pay attention to the list of ingredients located on the back of each bottle you buy. Why? Because some products may be a bit deceiving despite green, organic-looking bottle. Check out my list of ingredients you do not want to have in your bathroom for sure, because they’re toxic!
Parabens are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. You probably think: and what? Some preservatives must be used. Okay, but why those which according to costmeticsinfo.org interfere with the functioning of the endocrine system? Especially parabens stops production of endocrine hormones and glandular activity. Do you have thyroid problems? Not enough hormones or too much of them? You’d better check your shampoo, body lotion, conditioner, even face cream and cleansing gel ingredient list. If they contain any of those parabens: methyl, propyl or butyl… it is time to say goodbye! What is more, parabens mimic estrogen what can lead to cancer. It is a medical fact that estrogen stimulates breast cancer and anything absorbed through the skin may be as high as 10 times the concentration of an oral dose. (madefromearth.com).
Names of parabens on looong cosmetics list: ethyl, paraben, propylparaben, any other variations ending in paraben can be spotted as well, hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxybenzoate
Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause adverse health effects. This toxic substance is used in some medicines, cosmetics and other consumer products such as dishwashing liquids and fabric softeners. Isn’t it crazy?! The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen, also the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen.
How to find it on your cosmetic list? May be named: formaldehyde, diazolidinyl urea (or 3-diol diazolidinyl urea) 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1 (or bronopol) DMDM hydantoin.
Formaldehyde has been forbidden in Europe after studies which showed that it can cause cancer, allergic reactions, headaches, dizziness, immune dysfunction and much more sides effects.
Note: Be careful with nail lacquers – some of them may still contain formaldehyde. Personally I had very bad experience with one European brand (no more existing.. hmm interesting why), I didn’t know it contains this toxic thing and almost… lost my nails! They started cracking so much, getting thinner and skin around them was irritated. Since that time I always check my nails lacquer ingredients before buying.
#3 Sodium Laureth Sulfate – SLS
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is and ingredient derived from ethoxylated lauryl alcohol and used as a surfactant. May be contaminated with toxic dioxane. Because it is cheap, it is widely used in shampoos, cleaners, toothpastes. It is not known as carcinogen (causing cancer), however there are some studies which says that it may lead to cancer if using frequently. What is known for sure, SLES causes skin and eye irritation. According to the report published by International Journal of Toxicology in July 2010:
Sodium laureth sulfate can cause an itchy scalp and hair loss when used in shampoos, especially if not formulated to be non-irritating.
Do you want to risk your health?…
How to find it in ingredient list: usually it is one of the first positions SLS, SLES, but it has a lot of synonyms: alpha – sulfo – omega, (dodecyloxy), Poly (oxy-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt, decyl sodium sulfate, PEG (1-4) and much more.
#4 Paraffinum Liquidum & Petroleum
Petrol…fuel… yes. Parrafinum liquidum & petroleum are not far from your gasoline. Do you know this feeling on your skin after you put some body lotion – extra layer on your skin? Impression that it is soft but what it really is? Parraffinum or oil layer.
Petroleum in your cosmetics may cause cancer, because it contains 1,4-Dioxane. Dioxane has been listed by the World Health Organization and the Environmental Protection Agency as a probable carcinogen. Also because it is heavy oil it blocks pores, so your skin cannot breathe and is prone to infections. Petroleum hides behind many names, even one very deceiving – mineral oil! Another names: petrolatum, xylene, toluene or liquid paraffin.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency triclosan is a pesticide. It is widely used in anti-bacterial cosmetics like soaps, antibacterial gels, toothpastes. It kills bacteria, which sounds great, but… are all of bacteria bad for you? Not really. It can make bacteria resistant for antibiotics! What is important to those suffering from hypo/hyper thyroid disease, triclosan has been proved decrease the levels of some thyroid hormones. This is ridiculous! I think it is high time to invest in natural soap.
Just be careful…
There just some of the ingredients you should pay attention to. What I recommend, just be careful and check the most suspicious ones. I do not think you need petrol in your hair conditioner or another pore-blocking silicone in your face cream, do you? In the internet you may find a lot of information, however sometimes they are hidden on purpose. Because… who wants us to stop buying majority of the cosmetics produced by the biggest companies?
