Have you ever heard about an amazing plant that grows very high in Peruvian Andes – around 11.000 feet and above? This little root (size of radish) has so much power and it can help your thyroid! Let’s take a look at the benefits of Maca root.

#1 Hormones balance

Maca is believed to balance hormones. It supports endocrine system and regulates thyroid hormone production. Although Maca does not contain hormones, it does contain the building blocks from which the body can create hormones. This is a great news for everyone with too low hormone levels. Maca also contains iodine, which is very important for optimal thyroid function (I wrote about it here in my previous article). How much iodine contains Maca you can find bellow:
Every 10 g of Maca powder contains about .052 mg of iodine or about 35% of the RDA based on the .150 mg daily guideline. 10 g is 2 teaspoons.
As you can see, the amount of iodine in Maca falls well within the RDA for the most common dosages at or under 3 teaspoons daily,  (4 teaspoons – .156 mg – 100% RDA) however I take 4 spoons and I am good 🙂 It is up to you, if you are not sure, ask your doctor, although iodine is a very controversial topic…

#2 Women and men fertility

Maca increases fertility. Black Maca type has shown to increase sperm count and volume, red Maca has been shown to balance female hormones and ovulation cycles. Dr Axe on his website says about maca & fertility connection:
In one study done using animals and maca, it was found that in female animals taking maca, multiple egg follicles were able to successfully mature, which is important for ovulation and reproductive health.

I just started using it, but already see the difference. I am taking Maca + reduced my normal Levothyroxine dosage to a half dosage and I feel more focused & awake. It does not work like caffeine which gives me high energy just for the moment. Is Maca root gonna take my fatigue and tiredness problem completely away? I will come back to you with a review in about 4-6 weeks, but I really believe it might work.

Each Maca has a little bit different benefits. I found this page very helpful to find out that I needed Red Maca for my hormone balance and fatigue, however I am gonna try another ones too.

How to take Maca?

You can buy Maca as a raw powder, gelatinized or in capsules. I choose powder, because it is the most natural form (I do not need more capsules if take other supplements for thyroid… ). I add my Maca powder (1-2 tbsp) to a smoothie every morning. You can also drink your Maca just with water or juice, but for me with water it is too strong. You can find Maca in the best organic and health food stores. Be careful if you buying online – make sure the store is certified and sell real Maca. There are some fakes which may be harmful instead.
