My best sources of knowledge about hypothyroidism

I was never told that wrong diet can increase symptoms of hypothyroidism. I went to several doctors endocrinologists and nobody mentioned any kind of diet, nobody told me that patients with hypothyroidism may have a higher chance of having leaky gut, high antibodies (Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease) or even cannot digest lactose (diary-free) and gluten. No, these are not confessions of a disappointed patient. I just want to share with you some books titles, which I found helpful in these all kind of mysterious thyroid disorders topics.
When I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I started reading blogs, articles, books about thyroid written not only by doctors, but also by people who suffers from thyroid diseases and do not want to be levothyroxine (lifetime) addicted. What is interesting, I was not even able to find these sources in my native language, but I found English websites and books. In the USA there is much more researches and studies about thyroid diseases. Although there were a few books in my country, but I feel like doctors were skeptical about them – every time I asked them about something concerning diet or natural medicine, they looked at me like I am from a different planet… Well, not every book and thyroid-aware person recommend taking levothyroxine (T4 hormone) for your lifetime as the only available solution. I noticed there are also divergent interpretations about gluten-free diet as well as taking iodine – even between bloggers, not only doctors. How to find the truth? Test, try, observe your body & organism. There is no rule, even the laboratory blood norms are not absolutely reliable. You can check out my story, my hormones were in ‘norms’, but I already was hypothyroid! I am not the only case, there are many people who have their hormones in ‘norms’ and they suffer really bad, because in reality they have not enough thyroid hormones to function optimally. There are also those patients with subclinical hypothyroidism – a mildly high TSH level and a normal thyroxine – T4 level, which means the doctor will not prescribe them T4 hormone, because their T4 is in norm. So why do they suffer? Bellow I am presenting a few sources I do recommend to read if you would like to find the main reason of your under-active thyroid gland.
Books – an unusual approach
Hidden therapies – what your doctor won’t tell you, by Dr Jerzy Zieba. This is a very controversial book, because the author claims that there are some natural remedies which can help to treat even cancer. I think it is your choice whether you want or do not want to try these solutions, and no one should tell you that you cannot try them or it is bad for you, if they didn’t even check. I know some cases and there are comments from people who tried some of these solutions and it worked for them. Why not? You can always stop, I do not think any of natural sources may be harmful for us. Unless it is something processed, then obviously you have to think twice. Honestly, I am sure medications are more processed than herbs… Why does thyroid hormones tablets contain lactose or gluten? Have you ever thought about that? Why are they filled with these substances which can actually interfere with your thyroid? Gluten is noting good too, I wrote a little bit about wheat, by the way it was my most popular article – in just 1 day average readers amount was about 80! If you do not believe me, maybe you should read this book by Dr. David Perlmutter: Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar–Your Brain’s Silent Killers. The Doctor says baldly; carbs are destroying your brain. I completely agree, but first I had to test it on myself to understand it. Another good book confirming harmful gluten influence is Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health by William DavisDr. Williams concludes his book with a fact that removing wheat from diet is a key to loose weight and just look & be healthy. No wheat = no belly, simple. I know many, many people who lost weight when they started be on a gluten-free diet or even just ‘bread-free’ diet.
Hypothyroidism and autoimmune diseases – connections 
Another sources I am gonna present here are mainly related to autoimmune diseases, which are not really far from hypothyroidism… Unfortunately about 90-95% of patients with hypothyroidism have Hashimoto’s. What is it?!
Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition in which the body by mistake attacks and destroys its own thyroid gland. This means your own body produces antibodies which are enemies for your body.
Yes, it sounds crazy, but… let me explain. Normally you have antibodies and it is OK, but their role is to detect bacteria an viruses in your body and fight with them. But in Hashimoto’s instead of fighting against bacteria, your antibodies fight with your own thyroid gland or another cells of your body, which is very dangerous.


Hashimoto’s is much more then just hypothyroidism! Most patients with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism will have acid reflux, nutrient deficiencies, anemia, leaky gut, food allergies and adrenal insufficiency.  Symptoms of impaired digestion/absorption, anxiety, chronic fatigue and chemical/environmental allergies may be seen as well.  – Dr. Izabella Wentz  – she writes more about Hashimoto’s here.
There are many people having Hashimoto’s and they are not even diagnosed! Read this book if you are hypothyroid or having symptoms, it may give you answers for many of your questions: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause by Izabella Wentz
There are many potential triggers underlying Hashimoto’s that should be tested and treated including blood sugar imbalance, food sensitivities especially to gluten, adrenal issues, nutrient deficiencies, leaky gut, inflammation, heavy metal toxicity, and chronic infections. –

I  presented in this article a few valuable sources I do recommend to read if you would like to find the main reason of your under active thyroid gland. Not to make it too long, I just want to sum up by 4 points, especially for those who already suffer from hypothyroidism:
  • pay more attention to your diet; observe how you feel after eating gluten, diary, carbs etc.
  • keep reading books & blogs, studies
  • do not give up and dig deeper if doctors tells you that nothing is wrong with you, because your TSH hormone level is in ‘norms’
  • check your antibodies levels – if you have Hashimoto’s at least you would know the problem is not only your thyroid, but also (and mainly) your immune system is weak – how to check it? Test your blood: Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb) and Thyroidglobulin Antibodies (TgAb)
