Fluoride – for years considered as the best solution to prevent tooth decay. I remember when in Poland in 90’s kids at school [included me] were forced to brush their teeth with this extremely sour substance – by the way, did you have this ‘problem’ in the US? Probably no, because in 1945 fluoride has been already added to water in the USA. Anyway, I still remember this toothbrush nightmare. It may be true that fluoride can prevent tooth decay, but what about endocrine system? It destroys it.
There are two types of fluoride: calcium fluoride and sodium fluoride. Calcium fluoride is found naturally in underground waters. Because it is natural, it is less toxic (but not non toxic…) than sodium fluoride which is very bad. According to Dr. Axe definition:
Sodium fluoride is created as a synthetic waste byproduct from the fertilizer, aluminum and nuclear industries, this type of fluoride is added to many public water supplies. Already laden with lead, aluminum and cadmium, sodium fluoride has the ability to combine with other toxic materials and increase their potency. Far from healthy, the side effects of taking fluoride may have far-reaching negative effects on health as you will see, yet until recently it was advocated by both the American Dental Association and the US Public Health Service.
What is even more frightening – this type of fluoride is added to many public water supplies and you can find it in your tap water too! Especially in the US where fluoride is added to about 2/3 American’s taps (comparing to England where it is 10%). Shocking?
How fluoride impacts thyroid
A large study that looked at data from nearly every general medical practice in England suggests that water fluoridation may increase the risk of developing hypothyroidism (Newsweek).
Let’s take a look at some doctors opinions according to fluoride & thyroid connection:
This dramatic increase in thyroid dysfunction associated with fluoridation of the water supply adds to previous studies indicating that fluoride has an inhibitory effect on the thyroid gland. – Dr. Terry Davies, a professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York City.
Fluoride, particularly sodium fluoride, has been found to weaken the immune system and can damage the kidneys and liver. Symptoms of sodium fluoride toxicity are similar to fibromyalgia, including fatigue, muscle pain, memory loss and insomnia. It can also cause nausea, diarrhea, sickness, abdominal pain and increased thirst. – Dr. Axe
Fluorides are dangerous in general and in particular highly damaging to the thyroid gland – Dr Barry Durrant-Medical Advisor to Thyroid UK.
For a 70 kg (154 pound) adult, this means that 3.5 mg fluoride per day (or 0.7 mg fluoride per day with iodine deficiency) could result in thyroid dysfunction. The most recent exposure analysis by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average American adult is consuming nearly 3 mg fluoride on a daily basis, and some are routinely ingesting 6 mg per day or more. – Dr. Mercola
If you are still not really convinced, take a look at that research from 1930s of May by Litzka, Gorlitzer von Mundy:
Researchers used fluoride preparations to treat over-active thyroid illness. Their patients either drank fluoridated water, swallowed fluoride pills or were bathed in fluoridated bath water. Their thyroid function was as a result – greatly depressed. The use in 1937 of fluorotyrosine for this purpose showed how effective this treatment was; but the effectiveness was difficult to predict and many patients suffered from total thyroid loss. In fact, it was marketed not for over-active thyroid disease but as a pesticide! (Note the manufacturer of fluorotyrosine was IG Farben who also made sarin, a gas used in World War II).
There is also a report from 2006 Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Scientific Review of EPA’s Standards, the National Research Council (NRC) showing that:
Fluoride exposure in humans is associated with elevated TSH concentrations, increased goiter prevalence, and altered T4 and T3 concentrations with similar effects on T4 and T3 – reported in experimental animals.
Well, for me it is obvious that I do not want to have anything in common with this substance, however I realize it is not that easy to get rid off it, especially because it is added to water…
Say BYE to fluoride!
Fluoride has been classified as a chemical having substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity, according to scientists from the EPA’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory. You’d better stay away from it. How?
Make sure you do not drink water from the tap – just bottled or filtered (note: if you boil water, fluoride is NOT removed!)
Brush your teeth with fluoride-free toothpaste only, you can find them in whole foods, sprouts or other organic online stores
Be careful with teas – they contain fluoride too! The highest amounts you will find in black tea, red tea, green tea, much less in chamomile and other herbal teas
