Many people with hypothyroidism struggle with poor digestion & food sensitivities. Unfortunately food sensitivities can lead to gut inflammation which may be stopping you from absorbing nutrients from the food and in fact you may suffer from numerous nutrients deficiencies.
Constipation, bloated stomach, reflux – these are some of the symptoms which may occur if you are sensitive to certain foods. You can be sensitive for instance to milk, gluten, soy or eggs. It really limits menu, especially for breakfast. No cereals with milk, no eggs, no pancakes, no bread. Aaa! So what to eat?!
Find the reason, apply solution
The roots of my problems were gluten and lactose (dairy). When I got rid off them from my diet, I saw a significant difference, however after some time I had no idea what to eat for breakfast. What did I find helpful? Smoothies!
NOTE: First of all, I would like to highlight that I do not recommend smoothies which contains sugar, sweeteners, artificial flavors or even ice cream (no way!). I am talking mainly about green smoothies, with NO sugar. If so – it is sugar from fresh fruits, or if it is kale smoothie – sugar from dates. All natural ingredients. This way, you won’t boost your blood sugar to the point you will be almost shaking, but you will deliver yourself energy for a good 2-3 hours.
TOP benefits of smoothies
Green smoothie is packed with fiber – from veggies, and proteins – from coconut or almond milk. You can also add good fats, like avocado, which by the way will make your smoothie super creamy. If it is too thick, you can always add more water or crushed ice.
Easy to digest
Fruits or veggies blended into a smoothie are much better absorbing and easier to digest. Especially if you have a digestive issues, smoothie is a perfect solution.
Green smoothies (and in general these containing more veggies than fruits) are perfect to detoxify your body. This may help you to lose weight. I also noticed better skin condition – if you get rid off toxins, your skin looks much better too.
Stronger immune system
Smoothies contains plenty of vitamin & minerals. It depends what you add to yours, but for sure this good drinks can support your immune system. Add turmeric to your smoothie – it will become a really anti inflammatory boost drink!
Balancing blood sugars
Many people with hypothyroidism & Hashimoto’s disease may experience some sugar swings, even though they are not diabetic. Smoothies can help to balance and control your blood levels. According to American Diabetes Association:
Superfoods for diabetics are those that have a low-glycemic index rating and that contain important nutrients including fiber, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and E.
Examples of good ingredients to a smoothie (even for diabetics):
green, leafy veggies like spinach, parsley or kale
berries – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries – they rate low on the glycemic index + are high in fiber, vitamins, and other nutrients
citrus fruits – lemons, limes, oranges – extra rich in vit C and antioxidants. Citrus goes good with apples
nuts and natural nuts butters (almond, peanut – unsweetened!)
Smoothies are not only healthy, but also delicious and super easy to make. You can really play as much as you want with the flavors and colors. They are also very filling, and for me – they look so delicious! Don’t you want one right now? 🙂
