Ettenio – luxurious plant-based beauty care from Jamaica

It is cold, windy evening in San Antonio. All I want to do is to wrap myself into a warm blanket and wait until the summer comes. Then, I look at the package that has arrived in the morning: Ettenio brand sent me 4 of products from sunny Jamaica! I was able to try: Brown Sugar Body Scrub, Kaleidoscope Coconut Milk Bath Bar, Balm for dry cracked skin and Simply Divine Body Cream.

What is Ettenio?

Ettenio is the brand from Jamaica. They use only plant based and organic, highest quality ingredients. All their cosmetics are hand-crafted, made of raw extracts and botanicals. They also are Paraben-Free, Mineral Free, Sulphate Free, Petroleum Free, Silicone Free, Allergen Free and contain no artificial coloring and fragrances and are never tested on animals – which I absolutely love!

First impressions

When I opened the package, I could smell an amazing scent of the soap almost right away. Ettenio uses natural, essential oils as a fragrances, so you do not have to worry about any suspicious, harmful ingredients. Let’s take a closer look at the products I’ve received.20181215_183031

Jamaican Brown Sugar Body Scrub

Ingredients: Jamaica Brown Sugar, Kokum Butter, Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Cocoa Butter, Olive Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Vitamin E, Citric Acid, Optiphen.

This was the first product that caught my attention. It is locked in eco-friendly looking, brown package with super cute wooden spoon included. When I opened the product I fell in love from the first… scent. Ettenio’s Jamaican Brown Sugar Body Scrub lifts away dead skin cells and leaves you with soft, smooth and moisturized skin. It is absolutely amazing! It is the first body scrub that not only removes dead skin, but also Kokum & Shea & Cocoa Butter work wonders for my dry skin and moisturize it in the shower!20181215_185053.jpg

Kaleidoscope Coconut Milk Bath Bar

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Sustainable Palm Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Coconut Oil, Coconut Milk, Jamaican Brown Sugar, Kaolin Clay, Proprietary Essential Oil Blend

This amazingly good looking bar in colors of Jamaica cleans & moisturizes skin. It lathers very well and leaves the whole bathroom smelling so good, it also looks very pretty on the soap holder 🙂

BALM IN GILEAD With Panthenol & Kokum Butter Healing Therapy for Dry Cracked Skin

Ingredients: Distilled Water, Glycerin, Aloe Vera Juice, Sodium Lactate, Avocado Oil, Kokum Butter, Olive Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Hyaluronic Acid, Lanolin USP, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Panthenol, Potassium Sorbate, Essential Oil Blend of: Patchouli, Black Pepper, Lemongrass, Tea Tree, Anise and Cajeput.

I suffer from dry skin really bad (winter, postpartum, genes?), so I was really excited to try Healing Therapy for Dry Cracked Skin. The rich consistency balm is packed into convenient tube. Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Lactate and glycerin along with oils such as avocado and olive oil, has extremely moisturizing properties. It surely does, however I personally had an issue with the intense scent of this balm. It has Anise in it, and I am sensitive on that particular ingredient, so I am not really able to use it for my hands. I love it for the heels though. If you prefer unscented products, this balm is not for you… or you can use it for feet, like I do.

SIMPLY DIVINE Body Crème Meringue With Hyaluronic Acid & Kokum Butter For Very Dry Skin

Ingredients: Distilled Water, Kokum Butter, Shea Butter, Aloe Vera Juice, Olive Oil, Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, Cocoa Butter, Sodium Lactate, Niacinamide, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, MSM, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Xanthan Gum, Lactic Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Essential oils of: Lemon, Jasmine, Rose Italian Bergamot, Neroli, Cedar wood.

20181215_185019.jpg

This is really DIVINE product! I love how thick and rich consistency it is. Shea & Kokum Butter moisturize skin just great and they do even more by preventing water loss from your skin. What I love about this Cream is that the small amount is enough to spread all over your body. It absorbs well, does not leave oily residue (as products with petroleum or silicones do) and the skin feels soft. The only thing I wasn’t a big fan of is jasmine scent. I like fresh scents, citrus or no scent at all in my body creams, but it is just my personal preference. In this case I can forgive the scent, since cream works wonders for my dry skin!

To sum up, I am very impressed with Ettenio’s pure, natural ingredients and passion for creating such a luxurious, yet plant based cosmetics. I am sure these are not the last products I’ve tried. So far, I am already almost running out of Brown Sugar Scrub, and this is gonna be the next thing I’ll order on Ettenio. What will be yours? Beautiful smile? No problem! CariPro ultrasonic electric toothbrush review

‘A smile is the prettiest thing you can wear’ – I can’t agree more with this. I’ve always been aware how important the oral care is, in fact as a little girl I never skipped dentist visits and I brushed my teeth regularly. Later on as an adult I even bought myself an electric toothbrush, however my gums were too sensitive – they started bleeding and I had to go back to the traditional brushing routine, using soft bristles toothbrush.
After few years, I’ve invested in Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean Brush and this really changed my idea of clean teeth. They became visibly cleaner, smoother and my gums weren’t bleeding! Unfortunately, this was not a cheap thing (over 200$ for toothbrush!) and also, replacement heads are not very durable – they last 1-2 months and they are pretty expensive (26$ for 2).

Smile Brilliant CariPro – first impressions

When I got CariPro in my hands, I thought it looked very similar to Sonicare Diamond Clean from Philips. But there are some differences.

How to use ultrasonic toothbrush?

Ultrasonic brushes are very different from traditional brushes. An ultrasonic toothbrush usesa very high frequency of vibration, which is referred to as ultrasound to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth. In fact, you do not need to use so much physical motion as you do with traditional brush. How do I know it? Well, I’ve used Sonicare Diamond Clean, but I had to youtube how, because they did not attach the proper explanation. CariPro explains everything very well and provides pictures how to use their toothbrush.

Too long or too short?

There is a common opinion that you should brush teeth from 2 to 3 minutes. But how do you do that, do you set timer? I don’t think so. CariPro has a great built in system with brief pauses between each 30 second burst. That way, you know exactly when to move to a different quadrant of the mouth. Isn’t it great? I haven’t had it in any toothbrush before.

1 brush 5 options

Yes! You’ve read it right. CariPro toothbrush has five different option of brushing your teeth, from simply cleaning, to whitening, massage, gum care and sensitive mode. I think all of them are useful, I particularly like whitening and gum care mode ❤IMG_20181105_165047_114

Which brush is mine?

When you buy something new, people in your household also want to try it. In my case it is my husband. And that’s great, but… here is the thing – Philips Sonicare heads look totally the same and it makes it super easy to me to use his brush by accident (oops, sorry hun). Which maybe is not a tragedy if it happens once, but still, I would like to use only mine toothbrush, don’t you? And here we go: CariPro comes with 2 different electric toothbrush heads colors (bottom part) blue and grey, which makes life easier! It may seem like little thing, but in my opinion it is very convenient. Also, CariPro has added tongue scraper which really is the game changer.

Heavy duty

It is obvious the ultrasonic toothbrush has to fit the battery in it. Even though both Philips and CariPro charge easily (CariPro is suppose to last up to 30 days without charging, I used it for 2 weeks and it still works so far), Philips feels much heavier in hand. It happened to me that brush slide out of my hand… so I appreciate lightweight CariPro with matte, waterproof finish, because it is not slippery at all.

Price(less)

There is one more thing worth noticing: the prices. Sonicare Diamond Clean with 5 modes, one case and one head costs 199.99$. And you can buy more replacement heads for 2 for 26$. CariPro with 5 modes, 2 heads costs 119$, and replacement heads you can get for 13$ for 2. You can do the math…
To sum up, I love both toothbrushes: Philips Sonicare Diamond clean cleans teeth very well, also it has modern, very pretty designs and colors as well as plenty of convenient add ons as case or glass charger, however prices are also higher. I think it depends on what you really need, but CariPro as a cheaper version of Diamond Clean does really good job and it… kind of stole my smile! 😉

Want to give it a try?

I have a great news for you. You can win your own CariPro here.

Hope you’ll like your new purchase, let me know in the comments! Remember that there is nothing better to wear than a beautiful smile.IMG_20180225_193451_139

CariPro Ultrasonic Electric Toothbrush, that I was able to test for this review purposes thank to Smile Brilliant.

In pursuit of the best natural deodorant: Schmidt’s, Tom’s or ZionHealth?

Looking for a natural deodorant that actually works? Natural often means ‘no aluminum’ which is great step towards a better health, however I was looking for more. On my checklist: nice scent + odor block, easy application and preferably no white stains on my shirt and as a bonus, decent price. Which brand was the closest?

I’ve tested for you 5 deodorants:

  1. Schmidt’s Bergamot & lime

  2. Schmidt’s Pineapple & Coconut sensitive skin formula

  3. Tom’s of Maine Fresh apricot

  4. Zion Health Claydry deodorant original

  5. Zion Health Claydry deodorant eucalyptus mint

Schmidt’s Bergamot & lime

The first thing I look at are the ingredients. I always appreciate clean, non toxic and safe formula.
IngredientsMaranta  (arrowroot) Powder, Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda), Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (shea butter), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Seed Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (bergamot) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (lime) Oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E; sunflower-derived)IMG_20180714_163108_633
The second thing in my ranking is the scent. Don’t you agree that’s pretty important when it comes to a deodorant? Well, at least in my case, if I ever tried unscented one, it did not work.
The natural scent of this deodorant is really pleasant. Very refreshing lime, perfect for the summer!
Odor block: It did block odor for all day, I was very impressed how long lasting it is.
Application: Here the things get actually worse… The stick feels dry and deodorant is hard to apply. I got chills during application, and after all my armpits felt ‘rough’, not soft for sure.
Price is pretty decent: 8.99$
Concerns: Unfortunately, after using a few times I developed red, itchy rash on my armpits and I had to stop using this formula. Maybe it was too much arrowroot and baking soda? Not sure, but I decided to give a try to sensitive version of Schmidt’s.
Summary: I’d recommend it for you if you do not have sensitive skin or… you do not shave your armpits! 😀 In terms of odor – it really does the job, however it is just to harsh for me.

Schmidt’s Pineapple & Coconut sensitive skin formula

This formula is suppose to be more delicate than regular one. Producer excluded baking soda and used magnesium hydroxide instead. It still has arrowroot though for more protection.
Ingredients: Magnesium Hydroxide, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Maranta Arundinacea (arrowroot) Powder, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Butyrospermum Parkii (shea butter), Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Seed Oil, Natural Fragrance, Tocopherol (vitamin E; sunflower-derived)
Scent: The scent is nice, kind of like pinacolada, however a little to sweet for me as for deodorant.
Odor block: The nice scent changed in contact with my skin pH after a few minutes of application, and sweet pineapple coconut turned into… some weird scent, that I could not handle. I was not even sweating yet, but I just got sensitive to that scent. After about 4 hours, I needed to wash my armpits and apply some other deodorant, because I was sweating a lot and smelled pretty bad. I just do not think it was my best choice of scent of this deodorant. It blocks odor for maybe 2h, however in contact with my skin, the scent was not what I expected.
Application: The stick feels better and smoother than lime & bergamot formula with baking soda, deodorant is easier to apply and armpits feel soft.
Concerns: Weird thing happened: I really used a little of the product and despite that it rolled somehow and left chunks (?) of the stick on my armpits. I really did not like that feeling (and the look), I would be ashamed if I was wearing tank top at the gym and that would happen to me…
Summary: I do not recommend this deodorant if you are looking for something blocking your natural odor. Maybe if I tried different scent it would have been better… but for now I am not going to, since I’ve tried 2 from this brand and none of them was even close to what I’ve been looking for. Also, this particular deodorant is not the cheapest: 10.99$.

Tom’s of Maine Fresh apricot

Tom’s brand advertise their deodorant as long lasting and odor blocking up to 24h. This really got me excited, so I could not wait to try it. Ingredients are clean, vegan and fresh apricot sounded fantastic.
Ingredients: Propylene glycol (vegetable derived), water, sodium stearate, organic aloe barbadensis leaf juice, glyceryl laurate, natural fragrance, humulus lupulus (hops)* cone extract, organic helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, ascorbic acid, organic cymbopogon flexosus oil.
No baking soda, no arrowroot – seems delicate and safe, right?
Scent: The scent is very, very pretty. Very fresh and juicy.
Odor block: Similar to Schmidt’s sensitive formula, the nice apricot scent changed in contact with my skin pH to… not really fresh apricot. Unfortunately after about 2hrs I smelled really bad, I’d say worse than if I did not use deodorant! Truly. Not effective at all, I have no idea what happened!
Application: The stick feels very good, it is soft and feels like gel, I really liked it. No allergic reaction either. This is probably the only positive thing I can say about Tom’s deodorant.
Concerns: Not effective, smells weird in contact with my skin, just completely not what I am expecting from deodorant.
Summary: I’ve had my hopes high for this easy-applying deodorant in very decent price: 4.49$, however it is just not working for me, I won’t be buying again, I think it does not block odor, instead it actually makes you smell worse.

Zion Health Claydry deodorant (original scent)

Clay deodorant caught my attention since Clay is suppose to absorb odor and toxins, and ZionHealth deodorants are formulated with a special type of healing clay called Calcium Montmorillonite. Ingredients are clean, however after my rash (from baking soda in Schmidt’s, I suppose), I was a little  bit skeptical.  aviary-image-1533137835794
Ingredients: Maranta Arundinacea Root (Arrowroot) Powder, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Yuzu Fragrance, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Flavor, d-alpha Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Ionic Clay Minerals, Arnica Monatana (Arnica) Flower Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria (Chamomile)) Flower Extract, Carthamus Tinctorious (Safflower) Seed Oil, Camellia Sinesis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract.
Scent: The scent… oh my goodness! I love it, it is fresh, deodorant smells like oranges or… Fanta 😀 I cannot describe, but it is a really nice scent for a deodorant.
Odor block: It DOES the job! Guys, it really blocks odor for all day long. Yay! It is currently super hot in Texas and this deodorant, even if you sweat and feel kind of wet (it is not antiperspirant) you won’t smell bad at all. This is what I was looking for.
Application: The stick feels kind of between Schmidt’s sensitive & baking soda formula, which is not the softest, but still pretty easy to apply. Also, you need to apply very little of product, which is great, because it will last you for longer time.
Concerns: Hmm… no concerns, maybe just one – I might have applied too much at first, and I’ve got some white spots on my black shirt. It did not happen ever again though.
Summary: I was very impressed by this product, at first I did not believe clay in deodorant may actually change something, but it certainly did. This deodorant is my must have from now on. My husband loves it too!
I’ve tried cute travel size ClayDry in Eucalyptus mint scent and it works great for me as well. The only difference between original & eucalyptus mint is that the second one will give you kind of cooling sensation, so if you’re not a fan, stick to original one (or different available scents). To me cooling effect was actually a relief in hot day. Eucalyptus mint did not leave any white spots on my shirt. Ideal! And the price is only 7.99$!

Introducing Evolve Organic Beauty: Luxurious Skincare Products

Evolve Beauty is a range of handmade, award winning beauty products that are vegan, cruelty free and eco friendly. All cosmetics are made from the most effective, natural and organic food based ingredients. If you think that sounds good, read the whole review to find out more about this amazing brand originally from England.

Evolve sent me three products to try:

20180627_114013

Hyaluronic Serum 200 (40$)

Pure, clear serum for normal to dry skin that contains 200mg hyaluronic acid. It hydrates skin from within and plump up fine lines and wrinkles. It also has organic pomegranate extract in it, that softens and protects skin. Serum is very delicately fragranced with organic rosewater, however I cannot smell anything, which is a good thing since I do not like scented facial serums.
Ingredients – 98-100% organic
aqua (water), rosa damascena (rose) water*, aloe barbadensis leaf juice powder*, punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit extract*, glycerin, amorphophallus konjac root powder, sodium hyaluronate, sodium levulinate, sodium anisate, sodium dehydroacetate. *ingredients from organic farming
Even though it is hyaluronic acid, this serum feels really lightweight after applying. One pump is enough for face and neck! I am surprised with the consistency which feels more like gel than water – which is great because it is easier to apply the product without loosing part of it in your sink or the floor… which used to happen to me with more watery serums. I love to use this serum every night after I was my face with gentle cleansing melt, about which you can read bellow.

Gentle cleansing melt (26$)

Very luxurious cleansing balm that contains one of the most expensive and effective, nourishing organic baobab oil. Baobab oil soothes and hydrates while cleansing your skin from impurities and makeup.
Ingredients
(sweet almond) seed oil*, sucrose laurate, adansonia digitata (baobab) seed oil*, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) fruit water*, vanilla planifolia (vanilla) fruit extract*, rosa damascena flower oil*, tocopherol. *ingredients from organic farming
This melt feels just unbelievable. I mean, usually when I wash my face, I feel like it is dry or dehydrated right away. What is magical about this product – combined with water it turns from gel/oil to creamy cleansing texture, because it has natural sugar extracts in it. It leaves skin clean and very hydrated!

Daily Renew Face Cream (32$)

Moisturizer for normal to dry skin with a blend of pure organic oils. It has argan oil and hyaluronic acid to hydrate.
Ingredients
butter)*, coco-caprylate/caprate, glycerin*, prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil*, sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil*, candelilla/jojoba/rice bran polyglyceryl-3 esters, glyceryl stearate, parfum (natural fragrance), punica granatum (pomegranate) seed oil*, argania spinosa (argan) kernel oil*, sodium hyaluronate, aloe barbadensis leaf juice powder*, dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline, cetearyl glucoside, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tocopherol, lactic acid, dehydroacetic acid, xanthan gum, sodium levulinate, sodium anisate.  *ingredients from organic farming
I am very peaky when it comes to moisturizers and creams, since my skin is acne prone, it is mostly hot in Texas, and I tend to have my pores clogged and face shiny if I use to heavy formulated cream. When I read that it has organ oil, I was a little worries it may be too heavy for me. How little did I know! This cream is probably the best cream I’ve ever tried. Not saying this, because I got paid (I did not), but truly, if you have blemishes prone complexion, you’ll love this product. It hydrates without pore clogging, it does not leave thick film on skin, and… it smells so delicate yet amazing (vanilla & coconut natural fragrance). I highly recommend this cream.
To sum up, all Evolve Organic Beauty products I have tried are great. Their are pretty pricey, but definitely worth the price for such high quality. If you wish to try some, go to credo beauty and treat yourself, you won’t regret it.

Clean beauty blogger confessions: non-organic beauty products that I cannot live without

This may not be what you expect to hear from clean beauty blogger. However, I have to honestly admit that since I’ve replaced the majority of my toxic cosmetics with organic ones (and I’m so happy about that!) there still are some products that are nearly impossible to replace, or after replacing them I miss the non-organic formula that I got used to years before.

Better, but worse alternative?

There are many products that are clean, organic and USDA certified, which is great, BUT… not all of them are good quality products, even though they are more expensive than drugstore brands. Don’t believe me? Let’s start from hair wash routine. I’ve tried dozens of natural shampoo brands, and since they are great for natural hair, after I had my highlights done (another thing that is potentially toxic – bleach, because how do I naturally get cool/silver blonde shade…?!) these usually herbal based shampoos made my hair yellowish and brassy, that I do not like. So I had to go back to my more ‘toxic’ color protecting shampoo made by professional brand that is not 100% clean (no silicones and parabens, but it has some other stuff). hair-1744959_1920
Another thing that I have really hard time with is… nail polish. There are organic nail polishes or less toxic ones like Zoya which I really like, but because of hard water and the fact that sometimes it happens that my dishwasher is broken or I just cook a lot and need to constantly wash my hands, (or any other non toxic or even toxic) nail polishes simply last up to one week. Then, I have to do them again, wait until each layer dries which takes a lot more time than I would like it to… and I am not patient. I do my own shellac that lasts me 3 weeks, so the question here is: is it better to put on nail polish every week and breathe it in (even if it does have less toxic ingredients it isn’t as clean as water, believe me) or is it better to do shellac once a month and enjoy strong nails? I cannot get over that idea, shellac takes me 40 mins and there is no need to dry, just led lamp and you look gorgeous!
nail-varnish-883074_640
Last thing that I find pretty annoying is mascara. Yes, there are many organic, clean brands, or at least vegan, but every time I try one, I struggle. It works at beginning and then it flakes, dries super quick or blows up… like tarte 4in1 mascara for 23$ did to me. And the price 23-27$ is not cheap at all! I am really tempted to go back to my favorite Dior or Lancome mascara and just kind of forget that those are not clean. At least I will have pretty lashes all day, no clumping, flaking and itchy eyes…cosmetics-2116368_1920
In my opinion it is great if you can replace at least some products that you use daily with organic ones, however 2-3 exceptions won’t make you die. Isn’t it right? Of course if someone will invent organic shellac, hair bleach for highlights and super volumizing, but natural mascara that does not clump and flake, I’ll use them, let me know! 😉 But for now… I do not think I can get over these three products.
Do you have any non-organic products you cannot live without or they are so hard to replace? Let me know in the comments.
